Pro-life Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) is among our lawmakers pushing to have the Senate Judiciary Committee release S. 1670, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, to the entire Senate for a full up-or-down vote. Portman says, “The unborn are the most vulnerable members of our society, and I am committed to ongoing efforts to protect innocent life.”
Liberty Counsel Action is unabashedly pro-life and stands with forty senators in calling for passage of this bill. This is a tremendous opportunity for every pro-life American to save the lives of millions of unborn babies.
There is a growing movement in the United States Senate to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
This bill prohibits an abortion from being performed if the probable post-fertilization age of the unborn child is 20 weeks or greater unless the mother’s life is in danger.
After the House voted decidedly last year to pass a similar Act, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) knew that he would be leading the charge in the Senate to pass this bill. Graham is among the most ardent pro-life senators in the 113th Congress.
Here is what he said as he introduced the measure…
“At twenty weeks, mothers are encouraged to speak and sing as the baby can recognize the voice of the mother… Science and technology have advanced tremendously since 1973 [when it was believed that a 20-week-old fetus could not feel pain]. We now know that an unborn child at the twentieth week of pregnancy can feel pain. In fact, anesthesia is administered directly to unborn children in second trimester fetal surgery.
Given these facts and my continued strong support for life, I believe there is a compelling interest in protecting these unborn children who are among the most vulnerable in our society.
I’m confident that over time the American people and their elected representatives will say “yes” as well. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is the new front in protecting the rights of the unborn. I’m very proud to be leading this charge.”
Democrats have stalled this bill in the Judiciary Committee.
Senator Graham now has 40 cosponsors of the bill, but the Democrat majority in the Senate Judiciary Committee has locked it up, prohibiting it to come to the full Senate floor for a vote.
This is an urgent request for you to contact your Iowa senators, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and other lawmakers to help promote the passage of S. 1670, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
This is one of our greatest opportunities in recent years to advance the pro-life agenda!
I urge you, as a pro-life Liberty Counsel Action partner, to fax key lawmakers today! Momentum is building!
Our Fax Barrage system gives grassroots citizens the power to quickly and conveniently send personalized faxes to key members of the Senate. Even if you have already done so, please consider another round of faxes…
Americans’ attitude toward abortion is swinging.
If it is possible there was even one positive aspect of the horrific Gosnell trial, the descriptions of the barbaric act and babies writhing in pain shocked the conscience of the nation. A majority of Americans now believe that abortions should be rare after that 20-week period.
Last week, in West Virginia, the state senate passed a 20-week abortion limit by a 29-5 vote. Democrats control the West Virginia state senate 24-10.
As Senator Rob Portman accurately pointed out…
“While our nation is divided on whether or not abortion should be legal, on one point there is a growing consensus: we must all work together to reduce the number of abortions.
With all of the innovative medical treatments now available, more Americans are realizing that we are talking about children that deserve protection and overwhelmingly believe that we need a law like this.”
This is a time when all pro-life Americans must rise up in defense of the most innocent among us!
Join me in calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to release S. 1670, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, to the entire Senate for a full up-or-down vote.
We need 2 Democrats to join the Republicans in the Judiciary Committee to vote “yes” to get the bill to the entire Senate for an up-or-down vote. I believe that grassroots pressure will spur the committee to act.
Thank you for taking continued action on this break-through pro-life opportunity!
God bless you,
Mathew Staver, Chairman
