In a recent New York Times opinion piece, a former member of the Obama administration reflected on his trip to northern Iraq in the summer of 2014. He wrote that the one thing every religious leader there wanted most of all was for the U.S. to “help in enabling their people to stay safe on their ancestral lands in Iraq.”

When the Islamic State began it’s rampage across Iraq three years ago, the brutal terror group viciously targeted Christians and other religious minorities. In addition to kidnapping, torturing, raping, and murdering tens of thousands of victims, ISIS ransacked and destroyed homes, churches, and other buildings.

The devastation left behind in many ancient cities and towns will take years to repair. Even after being liberated by Iraqi forces, many homes, churches, and other structures still bore the “stains of terror” and were marked with the words “Property of Islamic State.”

But the brutal terror group’s intimidation tactics haven’t kept ISIS survivors from wanting to return to their communities. As U.S.-backed Iraqi Defense Forces reclaim more and more ground from the Islamic State, former refugees and displaced persons are finding their way home. However, getting there is only half the battle.
