Silence is Never an Option – It is Always Time for the Church to Speak

•A Message from Mat Staver, our Founder and Chairman•

»The 2014 midterm elections ranked among the most important elections in American history. “We the People” made important decisions, but the challenge was rather simple – first, we had to vote, and second, we had to vote biblical values. Silence was not an option! And voting in opposition to biblical values is sinful. While there is room for Christians and people of faith to disagree on many issues, some core issues are simply not debatable. God’s people must always recognize what is at stake and consistently be the salt and light to our culture that the Lord intends us to be!

Prayerfully, American Christians learned much in the 2014 midterm elections. I hope we will never forget that voting is not merely a political act; it is a prophetic witness to our communities.

As we believe and act in worship, we must believe and act when voting. In America, we cannot blame the government’s failures solely on the acts of politicians. In our constitutional republic, we are the government and politicians are to reflect the values of the people. When we vote for someone, we appoint that person as our agent to act on our behalf. If we fail to vote, then we allow someone else to appoint that agent.

While there are many things upon which Christians and people of faith may disagree, the killing of innocent children, for instance, is not debatable. Each person is created in the image of God. This Judeo-Christian doctrine is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence in the words, “We are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

It is a sin to appoint an agent who will vote to slaughter innocent children. And, it is a sin to remain silent when someone else appoints a killer to act on the People’s behalf. Silence is not an option. Dietrich Bonhoeffer famously said, “To not act is to act.”

Like the sanctity of human life, marriage between a man and a woman is not up for debate. God created male and female in His image, blessed them with the opportunity to join together as one, and permitted them to cocreate a human being in the image of God. Marriage has a unitive, procreative, (Genesis 1-2, Matthew 19:4-6, Ephesians 5:32, and 1 Corinthians 6:15-20), and spiritual dimension (Ephesians 5).

Marriage propagates the next generation, provides the best environment for children, and teaches us about the relationship of Christ to His Church and his sacrificial love. The family unit is the first government. If we weaken marriage, we weaken our communities and hurt children. Same-sex “marriage,” as a matter of public policy, says that children do not need moms and dads. Such a policy is nonsense and is contrary to the natural created order and Scripture.

We need to continually appoint agents at all levels of government who love God and who will serve as ministers of justice. Our appointed agents should respect life and God’s natural created order of marriage. These agents must cherish liberty and protect our unalienable right to worship our Creator – that is, they must protect our religious liberty, not trample it under the government’s feet. From the lowest elected office to the highest, each person must hold these values. A person who does not fear God and respect life will likely have no problem taking the People’s money and their property for illegitimate ends.

Pastors and people of faith must consistantly raise their voices at such a time as this!We live in unprecedented times in American history. For the first time in the history of any nation, we in America are being forced to participate in genocide through forced funding of abortion. And for the first time in history, marriage and gender are being deconstructed, the consequences of which will be catastrophic.

This movement is not a passive one–those who do not accept and affirm deviant sexuality will be forced by law to do so. Recently, we saw the coercive nature of government power in the hands of a deviant individual when Houston’s lesbian mayor attempted to subpoena the sermons of pastors who spoke out about a perverse “bathroom law” in that city that would allow “gender-transitioning” individuals to use the public facilities of their choice. Thankfully, the widespread outcry against this abuse has temporarily blunted Mayor Annise Parker’s pro-homosexual tyranny, but her impulse to deny pastors in her community their First Amendment rights remains.

While these times are unprecedented in American history, Jews and Christians have faced even greater challenges over the ages.

The Jews in Egypt were being crushed under Pharaoh, but God raised up a deliverer, and today we celebrate Passover. The entire Jewish population was scheduled to be killed on a single day during the Persian Empire, but God raised up Esther and Mordechai, and today we celebrate the Feast of Purim. And when Jesus was born, the maniacal King Herod tried to kill the infant Messiah by destroying an entire generation of males in Bethlehem, but today we celebrate Christmas. And in the midst of paganism, Jesus told his disciple, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”

Pastors and Churches Must Take the Lead in Our Culture!

Liberty Counsel’s Pastors & Patriots initiative continues to dispatch two teams into targeted regions – one that meets with pastors and one that holds “Who Will Stand?” rallies in churches. The pastor team is led by a pastor and two assistants. They travel the country meeting with pastors in a 90-minute presentation. Pastors are encouraged to replace their “politically correct” muzzle with a megaphone! The rally team consists of an event emcee and five assistants equipped with a five-screen, multimedia, two-hour presentation. The response we have received from people who have attended these meetings is very positive. We want to mobilize increasing numbers of people of faith to take culture-changing action!

Visit us at or for more information. We are continuing to meet with pastors and hold rallies in churches now that the last ballot in the 2014 midterm has been cast. Please, support Liberty Counsel with your financial gifts so that we can also send out tens of thousands of the DVD Silence is Not an Option and continue to meet with pastors and hold rallies. We want to wake up pastors and the Church to advance Judeo-Christian values until our objective is fully reached and there are no more attacks on our precious freedom of religion and rights of conscience!

We recently did an analysis of our Liberty Counsel supporters and their level of citizen engagement. What we found was astounding: Looking at the 2010-midterm elections in critical states, we found that 89.8 percent of Liberty Counsel supporters were registered and voted!

This level of participation is astounding and reveals that Liberty Counsel supporters are actively engaged in the political process. Except for one state that registered 79 percent (which is still well above the national average), the other states ranged from 87.8 to 95.1 percent! I have not heard of any other organization that has such high voter participation among its supporters.

As you probably know, we have a number of voter education and mobilization tools on our websites at,, and Please visit these sites and encourage your fellow church members and others in your local community of faith to vote biblical values at every opportunity. You have a tremendous, God-given effect over the voting behavior of those inside your circle of influence!

We need spiritual revival in America. And like the 180-degree turnaround from annihilation to victory the Jews experienced in the time of Esther, the adversity we face can turn around when God’s people humble themselves, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways. Then God will hear from Heaven, forgive our sins, and will heal our land
(2 Chronicles 7:14).

Invest in Liberty Counsel’s Pastors & Patriots initiative and help us to continue mobilizing pastors and people of faith to advance our shared Judeo-Christian values. The Lord has given you the ability to be a real “difference maker” in our embattled culture!
